RDK HIFI MEETS THE DISCIPLES - 21.01.06 PARIS DUB MEETINGS PART 3 - CABARET SAUVAGE It was around twelve thirty as i reached inside the Cabaret Sauvage. The version of No Wicked Can’t Reign by Ripton Hilton is sounding inside the admission gate and the chillout where the stalls are laid... inside the dance RDK's set is in triangular way as the public sets in this arena, some other taking a serious shift already on the tables on the whole sides of the place. Are they not here to dance ? I see on the control tower Markie Lyriks and beside Jonah Dan, Knati P & Rasta Indian. This 3rd edition of Paris Dub Meeting reaches to its name as Disciples and RDK Hi-Fi play alternatively till dawn (30min each and then 2 "tunes" each for the last hours).
My arrival is right as Russ D's revival set ends up, being backed by Jonah Dan as MC (playing still once repeater during the night). Those 2 artists complete each other so perfectly : Jonah Dan sings back some of his earlier tunes like the terrible Fight the Right (from the 90's on his label Inner Sanctuary) and adds in also some spiritual speeches. Russ D wil play during the dubplate portion numerous artists : Murry Man (a terrible dubplate mix of Burn Fire Pon Dem that reaches a big forward), Ras Mac Bean (with the title The Race, a terrible Disciples Production to come…), Bunny Lie Lie (his very powerfull Babylonian), Christine Miller, Sister Rasheda, Anthony Johnson, Danny Vibes (a dubplate mix of his Natty Nah Go Run), Jah Mason, Prince Malachi (a dubplate mix of his Jah Love), Tony Roots (dubplate mix of Chant) and also the martial dubplate special for BoomShakaLacka, the "Back outta war" by Candyman… The tune reaching the biggest forward is the dubplate mix of Live in Love by Pressure (artist of St Thomas, VI) on the Sane Kry riddim by our bredrin Neeko "Rise UP" a video is available on his site http://www.riseupshow.tk/ in the productions section). Russ D uses perfectly RDK's sound and his dubplates are a real enjoyment for the numerous people present at Cabaret Sauvage. Also, he lives really his music : chanting, dancing, using the echoes, reverbs and sirens with such brilliant talent... the mixing in the dance live is an art that Russ D handles so precisely ! Nuff respect to the Disciple.
Markie Lyriks came backed by his MC Knaty P and a special guest, Rasta Indian, they taking mic alternatively for RDK. Markie played some regular tunes like Praises by Jah See or also one recent Johnny Osbourne Black Star Liner but also number of dubplates. An old timer JAh forest with even Lionpaw for the intro (95-96), the Pink Panther from Blood Fire Possee (a classic mid 80's tune) that catched the crowd, a dubplate from Cultural Warriors Studio from Lionpaw with Trifinga on the guitar, dubs from Jah Vibe Master (classic mid 90's dub studio), dubplates from Sandeeno, Tony Roots, Bongo Tom (a huge dub where he plays harmonica), Orvillle Smith... We can only being surprised the dubplate part started so quickly, taking Russ obviously into it too.... well surprised because its in the regulars also that Markie can bring on crucial vibes in his selection (as for Early D tchunes)... and also going into dubplates from early session is very dangerous when playing Disciples. Markie proposed a very solid performance as much in the selections quality than by the entertainment he brings. Nuff Respect to RDK Hi-Fi. Well the choice of mic is maybe not the best affecting a little the performance of their set and making harder for the communication with the massives.
This night was the occasion to see one of the masters of dub : Russ D that really kept it high, the notes of the huge Back outta War still sounding in my head...
Rendez-vous on feb. 11 for Paris Dub Meetings part 4 with Blackboard Jungle, Freedom Masses & Iration Steppas. Thanks to Antoine & Gaël of Dik Music, Isabelle of Salaambô and all artists present at Paris Dub Meetings part 3.

INTERVIEW RUSS D
What impressions do u keep after Paris session... which moments were very special in the night ?
I was very happy with the response for the night, we enjoyed ourselves and really appreciated the opportunity to play the session... this was also the first time in many years since I played in Paris so i was`nt fully sure what to expect, and a little aprehensive of what was expected, but as it turned out it was a boom night, special throughout...Have to give a big yush to marky rdk for letting us play the sound and for keeping it on a strict friendly vibe between us... I played a lot of fresh tunes that night and could`ve done with at least another 3 hours to play many that I missed, but y`know its one session so I just hope we can get a next chance to showcase the works.
We were also wondering if a meeting ever happened between BSL sound system and Jah Shaka... obviously thinking about early dayz.
No we never played with Jah Shaka, and I always felt I never wanted to play Shaka, I would`nt have wanted to be in a dance with him where it could get competitive, either from our point of view or the crowds...to be honest I would always prefer to play my own dance not with or against another sound, I`ve had to play against other sounds many, many times, its part of sound system culture, and I`ll do it when required, but they inevitabley can get competitive, this can bring great moments in a dance, but I also feel it can make the flow of the dance too mix up, for me I prefer to get into my own flow, you can decide when to drop certain tunes or certain styles of tune and your not swayed by what the other sound played last, I think the crowd also respond better to your individual flow, they get the gist of where your going with your selection and the vibe your on.
What are the next productions that you plan to release in the coming months ?
Well, last year I did`nt release anything myself, many reasons, partly I was producing for some other people and partly cause I was upgrading my studio a little. I was of course recording and working on my own productions, I have a good number of tunes here for release, roots tunes with singers like Ras Mac Bean, Bunny Lie Lie, Christine Miller, Lutan Fyah, Kenny Knots and more... I`ve just released two 7" with Mykal Rose and Anthony Que, I`m not fully sure what next but I have another Anthony Que tune on a relick of the Drum Song riddim and I also have Christine Miller on that, it could be next, I have Mac Bean and Bunny Lie Lie on a relick of Bunny`s old tune Babylonian...so I think it`ll be either of those two sets of tunes next... I have a tune with Christine Miller called Too Be Poor Is A Crime, its not a version of the old Still Cool tune, just on that kinda theme, but I`ve had good response about that tune, I just need to get a next artist on the riddim... hopefully if things go alright with my plans on releasing 7" I can keep it up throughout the year... I`m also doing some remix and mix work for two French producers, one of them the Sane Kry remix for Neeko Rise Up that features nuff VI artists, thats getting excellent response at the moment, it tore up the dub meeting !...I know some will be asking `what about some dub ! hopefully there`ll be a few things come to keep them sweet too, some more old time Disciples, so watch out !
In another hand, what are the labels or producers you see as proeminent in late 2005 early 2006 ? What are the sounds to follow or look for ?
In a way I don't really keep an eye out for anyone in particular, my years listening to reggae has shown me that the music can come from big and small stables, I`m someone that always opens an ear to the obscure, I love finding some unknown tune on an unknown label that reaches me the same way as the more established artists and producers, you see so many new labels come up, have a boom tune, then don`t see another, its the way it is and I`m happy with checking reggae music in that way.
What is your feeling about this new type of vocalists from the V.I ...I mean not only how u rate them but do they have something particular we could point ?
I`m not fully up on all the different artists outta VI, its still early days for me checking them, the most exposure I`ve had is through doing the remix for Neeko, but it seems to me there`s some very good talent there, for some I think they need time to hone their skills a little more, this not a problem, everything takes its time...I`d like to see some of them on singles, 7" y`know, hear them on the right set of riddims and competing with ja reggae artists on that level, I think then they`d really start to make more impression... at the moment I would`nt say what i`ve heard is coming any different, not in any kinda revolutionary way, but its all concious, and I may be making my own connections with some of them during this year.
Thanks to Russ D to have spend that time for answering our questions…Nuff respect everytime !
